Baba Yaga- Slavic Mythology

Baba Yaga

Baba Yaga is one of the most recognizable creature in the Slavic Mythology. Baba in Slavic languages means grandmother, but There are two versions of the origin of this name. Yaga is probably a diminutive of the feminine name Jadwiga or thats  comes from the old Russian verb yagat which means to abuse.

She was usually shown as old woman with hump, long nose and spindly legs. That witch lives in a hut with chicken legs on the bottom that allow it to move. The hut was mostly in the midlle of the marsh. When people were meeting Baba Yaga, she could give them a blessing or a curse. She was spooking little children of all of the Slavic countries.  That vetsion of the Baba Yaga were shown very good in "Hansel und Gretel".Other sources show her as oracle who's have a lot of wisdom and people were asking her for their future.
This is how the Baba Yaga was looking, but in the polish serial "Polish Legends" she was shown as a beutifull, young women with ginger hair.
